Do you guys realize that popcorn is $7 a bucket?

REG's new logo: hey, at least they're being frank.

I was informed this past week by a theater-employee that the large bucket of popcorn, sold at all Regal theater locations and good for one free refill, has jumped in price. A bucket of popcorn, which might cost the theater, at the very most, $1.50, is now $7.00.

Seven dollars, people.

Now, $6.00 was pushing it. $6.50 was completely absurd, but I learned to live with it. But $7.00 for a bucket of stale, barely buttered movie theater popcorn is, quite frankly, the single most ludicrous concept modern cinemas have ever attempted to push on their patrons.

Does Regal realize that $7.00 is nearing the price of a matinee admission ticket? When the price of your popcorn is rivaling that of the actual admission tickets, a meeting needs to happen where a sane person stands up and says, “Um, hey, this is just, you know, a small issue, but … did you know that we’re currently selling our popcorn, which, if you weren’t aware, is almost always stale and disgustingly tepid, for $7.00 a bucket? I just wanted to fill you in, seeing as how a matinee admission ticket is currently $7.50. Also, we should stop showing any Wayans brothers movies that are released.”

Alright, so that last bit is just wishful thinking, but honestly: do the higher-ups at Regal even think about the fact that, at some point, making a $6.00 profit off of every bucket of popcorn might be considered stealing from the customer?

The cheapest combo “deal” right now at Regal theaters, which includes a large popcorn and two medium soft drinks, is $16.00. Let’s do some math here, shall we?

A typical can of soda contains 12 fluid ounces. A medium drink at Regal contains 44 fluid ounces. So, a Regal Cinemas “medium” soft drink contains roughly four cans of soda (and I’m being generous). By this rationale, we can conclude that this combo deal contains the equivalent of eight cans of soda.

Eight cans of soda, at a retail price of $0.50, comes to $4.00.

The Regal Cinemas large bucket of popcorn contains the equivalent of four bags of microwaveable popcorn. Bags of popcorn run, on average, for about $0.79 per bag.

Four bags of popcorn, at $0.79, comes to $3.16.

8 cans of soda ($4.00) + 4 popcorn bags ($3.16) = $7.16

Regal Cinemas large popcorn / 2 medium sodas combo = $16.00

Which brings our total difference to: $8.84.

Which essentially means that you’re paying nearly nine bucks more than you should for some cold popcorn and a couple of flat sodas.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Regal friggin’ Cinemas.

  3. Try and calculate the amount the theater actually makes from their admission ticket...not nearly enough to account for keeping the theater itself afloat. Selling you a ticket just gets you into the door...selling you a $7 popcorn allows the theater the privledge of showing a Wayan's Bro. flick to you.

  5. This is an excellent example of why I have my own home theater system and can honestly say the reason my family sees fewer movies at the Cineplex. A couple of movies a month with the family cost more than enough money to make payments on a top of the line home theater system. ((4 tickets) + (4 sodas) + (2 buckets of popcorn)) X 2 = $128 or ((2X16 [for the awesome meal deal]) + (4 tickets) X 2 = $94
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t 7.50 a matinee price? Don’t get me wrong, I much rather see movies at the theater but I can enjoy them just as much at home if I put my money into something more long term.

  7. I am retired and go to the movies much more than most people. My wife & I go usually twice a week, more if they have anything worth watching. I only go to Carmike Threater because the popcorn price is $3.50 for a refill bucket! That's advertised price. Our Carmike only charges $1 for a refill bucket !!! Plus we usually go to the matinee for the $5.50 ticket !! Down with those $8 popcorns at REGAL !!
